Everyone who travels time to time to different countries knows how painful it can be to get some travel cash or use cards abroad.
Mostly, it’s because it is very expensive. Banks and card companies are charging different costs and the currency conversion rates are usually super bad.
Luckily we live in the modern ages and the internet is disrupting the old, rusty banking sector. In this post, I would like to introduce my most favorite way paying abroad. Revolut.
Note: Revolut only works for the residents of European countries at the moment, so if you are from the outside of Europe you may want to stop reading here. However, they are planning to go globally eventually (hopefully sooner than later) so you may as well find this article useful for the future.
What is revolut?
Revolut is a mobile app which comes with the plastic card and allows you to transfer money to it. By bank transfer or a simple card payment. At the time of writing, this post revolut offers three main currencies you can switch money between. GBP, EUR, and USD.
Holiday money super easy
Transferring money between these virtual currency accounts allows you to plan in advance and get the best rate way before your holidays.
If you are traveling to the country with a different currency, everything is still ok.
Paying by revolut card or taking out cash in the ATM will be converted with the actual FX rate at the moment of the payment. Using the revolut card for both, payment and withdrawal is without any fees and that’s a pretty sweet deal. I’ve used Revolut in a few countries already and it just works. Magic.
It is a MasterCard card which is also contactless so you can use it pretty much everywhere where they accept payments by the card.
Keep an eye on your travel expenses
Another good thing about revolut is that it keeps track of your spendings. Every card transaction you make is stored and contains a lot of useful information. Name of the place, category and which country the payment was in.
Recently, revolut added a feature allowing you to get multiple cards. I’ve got one for my wife and now we can spend money separately and still keep an eye on our expense during the holidays or business trips.
After a few months of using the revolut card in many different countries, I really, couldn’t find any drawback. The card has never been refused. The response is instant so the minute you make the payment you will see the notification about the payment on your mobile phone. It just works.
Where is revolut available?
Revolut is available (as of June 2017) to legal residents of the countries below. It’s basically only for the Europe at the moment. In the future, we will cover other options, also for the travelers from the outside of Europe.
